White grape 🇫🇷 Northern Rhône, France

Viognier

/ vee-oh-NYAY /

Lush and fragrant — apricots, honeysuckle and a silky texture.

Viognier nearly disappeared in the 1960s, surviving mainly in tiny Condrieu. Today it's loved for its full body, low acidity and heady perfume of apricot and flowers. In Côte-Rôtie a little Viognier is co-fermented with Syrah to lift the aromas and stabilise colour.
