White grape 🇮🇹 Roero, Piedmont, Italy

Arneis

/ ar-NAYZ / · Also known as Nebbiolo Bianco

Piedmont's aromatic white — pear, white peach and a soft almond finish.

Arneis means ‘little rascal’ in Piedmontese dialect — a nod to how tricky it is to grow. It was traditionally planted among Nebbiolo vines to attract birds away from the red grapes. Rescued from near-extinction in the 1960s, it now makes soft, aromatic, fruit-forward whites in the Roero hills.
