White grape 🇪🇸 Northern Spain

Viura

/ vee-OO-ra / · Also known as Macabeo, Macabeu

Spain's versatile white — crisp in Cava, golden and nutty in aged white Rioja.

Viura is the main white grape of Rioja and, as Macabeo, the backbone of Cava. Young, it's fresh, floral and citrusy. Given long ageing in oak, as in traditional white Rioja, it develops remarkable nutty, honeyed complexity and can last for decades.
